As an Individual, Business or Organization I've made the following efforts to give back to the community, be mindful of the environment, reduce waste, and/or stimulate the local economy.
EkoCrete Hawaii is making an effort to reduce the amount of demolished concrete that goes into our landfill, and alleviate some pollution as a result of storm water runoff. Presently 80% of our demolished and discarded concrete goes into landfill. EkoCrete is concrete produced out of 90% recycled product. It is made of fly ash, recycled aggregates, Eko100 admix and less than 10% Portland cement. Fly ash is the waste and by product of coal burning produced by our local plant on leeward Oahu. The recycled aggregates are acquired from reclaiming demolished and discarded concrete which is crushed into completely good and reusable aggregate. The Eko100 admix is made of nano fibers and organic compounds that allow the use of recycled materials without sacrificing strength or durability. The result is a creamier faster curing concrete that is easier to work with, uses 50% less water and environmentally responsible. Less water usage benefits us with limited water in Hawaii as well as vastly reduces leeching. EkoCrete strength, durability and life expectancy meets or exceeds traditional concrete performance. The manufacturing process of new Portland cement is one of the biggest environmental offenders contributing approximately 12% of the total greenhouse gasses in the world today. It is proven that EkoCrete saves 75% of the energy it takes to produce traditional new cement. EkoCrete has been used in California for over a year now with outstanding results. In addition to the concrete EkoCrete is offering a line of permeable pavers. Permeable pavement is very important to managing storm water runoff especially in large urban areas. This will vastly reduce the pollutants that will make their way to our oceans and streams. Even though we do not yet offer grey water systems our permeable pavers can be used in conjunction with grey water harvesting systems. The grey water can be used to water our landscaping and golf courses thus reducing the burden on our water supply here in Hawaii. This can be incorporated in both residential and commercial. The website for our paver line is www.belgard.biz
