Aloha,

Keith Rose here.

I’m organizing the ‘350 Honolulu’ rally to take place on Saturday October 24, 2009 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the State Capitol.

On that day throughout the world, rallies will be held to raise awareness of climate change and to establish a goal of 350 parts per million of CO2. This movement is in preparation for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen December 7-18, 2009.

This 350 ppm number is The Most Important Number in the World and is a tangible and appropriate goal that our leaders need to have in mind going into the Conference.

We want to make an iconic image from Honolulu and what I had in mind is to form a large human ‘350’ in front of the Capitol Building. I want to have this assembled for photo at 3:50 p.m. If we have enough people we’ll form a human lei around the building.

I have the permit for the rally and want your support and participation for this event. As an environmental leader, please spread the word to your circle of influence.

Please see www.350.org. Thos organization and movement is founded by Bill McKibben.

I look forward to hearing from you and let’s make this the most significant environmental rally to date!

Sustainably yours,
Keith Rose

The Oahu Invasive Species Committee (OISC) is a voluntary partnership of private, governmental and non-profit organizations and individuals united to prevent new invasive species infestations on the island of Oahu, to eradicate incipient species, and to stop established species from spreading. The group is concerned with all non-native invasive species threatening agriculture, watershed, native ecosystems, tourism, industry, human health, or the quality of life on Oahu.

OISC vs. Miconia

In July and August, the OISC field crew concentrated on ground surveys for our number one plant target, Miconia calvescens. Miconia is native to South and Central America and was brought to Hawaii as an ornamental plant. It is relatively difficult to find in its native habitat, but here in Hawaii, it forms thickets under which nothing else can grow. Not koa, not ohia, not any of the thousand native plants that exist only on our islands can survive under a thicket of this tree. Once Miconia gets… Continue
